A single, looming tower in the heart of a long abandoned residential district. None living know where it came from. The Onyx Tower was once a school for the magical arts. When the spellplague came to Karthin, the college’s headmaster arranged for an intricate spell to be cast that would move the college forward in time, thus protecting it from the spellplague. Unfortunately, the spell only resulted in shunting the tower into the Shadowfell.
Hundreds of years later well after Cabal has fallen to disrepair and been occupied by new residents, the tower appeared again. Those who have ventured toward it to explore never return. The surrounding district seems to absorb light and always be stuck at dusk. This has earned it the appellation O’pilis Nox, which means ’stuck before night.’
This strange company began but thirty years ago from a spirited visionary of a man. The dwarf was a former member of the Underforge but had the great idea to build himself a fortune through deceiving others. The former fish district where the Onyx Tower stands is abandoned but for a single, large building near a small dock. This building blazes with divinity, or so those coming here say. They promise that for a small price, one can be allowed into a place that is actually a vast paradise. They promise to bring people to a portal where all their dreams will come true. This portal, is of course, within the Onyx Tower. By stepping into what seems a deathtrap one really will walk through the doors into a place called Rassi, a place that some claim is the realm of the afterlife for Laris’s chosen. For those who worship different gods, Afterlife Co. promises that there are smaller portals into all of those realms too.
Unfortunately, the first owner passed away in his bed and has been replaced by his much more eccentric son. Demitri Goldfist is a friendly man with more then enough religious intent to surpass his more conniving father. Demitri is a devout follower of Laris and has even built a small shrine to him within the company’s offices. He firmly believes that his purpose in life is to aid in bringing others to the afterlife that will await him when he chooses to pass through its hallowed portal.
